Okay.
Not in chatplay.
But until this has somewhere else to go, here it stays.
I ran into Cat on a Gifted/high school/Boarding school RP.
We wanted to see a teenage Gavin.
We couldn't. Long story.
But now I wanna see everyone's petty pathetic high school characters.
Part spoof, part not-too-subtle self-serving shout out. Make everything fit a typical modern high school, but still represent your characters.

The setting is, of course, class. Let's make it first period or something.
I'll start when someone shows interest.

Ooh, very good idea. Love the name. No where close to mine though :3 I'll set Fortune and Shikyo down. They'd make a good pair. :3

[Raylene Hope]

-dishes out Raylene and Ger- I may add the others. Polly would probably be expelled too fast. >_>

Hmmm.... I think Daruka would fit in just fine. So I won't use him. xD But then Tavor trying to be normal..... Knives well. I don't see how Knives would do.

[Gavin]

Okay, so here we go.

The setting is Illinor Prep, a boarding school for the rich and clever. Scholarships go to the nerds who can test in, but if you've got the money feel free to pay your way too.

It's a multi-building setup, with a dorm building for each gender, a science building, a history/english/language/art building, a performing arts building, and a large school gym.
Library is located in the history etc. building, and there's a cafeteria in each dorm building.

Taking this as seriously as possible, the rules of the school should be observed:

Those students who exhibit arcane powers should be reminded to keep them in check. Any sparring involving magical powers must be approved by a faculty adviser and conducted in the designated area of the gym. Attacking another student with magic can result in expulsion.

As always, students may not be in the dorm rooms of opposite gender students after eight o'clock.

Weapons are not permitted on the school grounds. As with magic, expulsion may be considered.

Those who are attending on scholarships may lose their funding should their academic performance begin to lag.

Teachers have the right to assign detentions for any action, but the student may appeal the decision to a higher faculty member.

Students must have passes to leave the school grounds.

Classes start at seven thirty for those who are lucky enough to not have a free first period. Don't be late!

[Raylene Hope]

Dong!

The final chime of the ancient grandfather clock signaled that it was 8pm. It was time for the children to separate into their respective genders. Sitting alone in the library, this meant very little to Raylene Hope. It did, however, tell her that she had been there for four hours, sitting stiffly on the floor. Her legs had already fallen asleep. There was dust on her delicately sculpted nose and a pile of old books beside her. One was a medical book almost two hundred years old. Another was a very old copy of Les Miserables. She had a few herbal remedy books and a Native American history book as well.

Other miscellaneous books were scattered around her as she read. Her current book was titled The Trail of Tears. Her piercing blue eyes glistened with tears she would never shed and she absent mindedly bit down on her lower lip. Her brown hair hung loose around her and curled on the floor. She was dressed surprisingly casual for being a spoiled rich girl. The iconic Miss Marc, wide-eyed and wandering gazed from her fun gray pima cotton tee. Her top was paired with white skinny and stretchy jeans with the bottom hems rolled up once. They were classically cute. The outfit was made slightly less casually by the khaki colored peep-toe pumps she wore. It was a fifty dollar look, but it cost her almost a thousand dollars.

This was not vanity. It was simply the way she was raised. A lot of people saw Raylene as what she was; rich. And then there were all the stereotypes that went along with that tag. Some were good and some were not. Raylene’s sharp eyes and radiating confidence gave her one universal tag. She was intimidating. Untouchable. Nobody knew her.

Her isolation had nothing to do with a conscious decision on anyone’s part. There seemed to be an invisible barrier between and others. Only a few people called her friend. They knew her likes, perhaps. Her dislikes. The basics. Nobody called her best friend. Nobody knew her soul. And Raylene could never fit in among the general crowd. It was as though the two could not coexist. One saw Raylene or they saw the crowd. She was a reality unto herself. Rather than show her loneliness, Raylene escaped to the library. She was slowly making her way through every book Illinor Prep had to offer.

[Connor]

He laughed, wrapping his arms around his stomach and curling his legs up before falling back against the bed; the girl he was sitting with laughed equally as hard.
"I'm serious!" she exclaimed through her laughter, which only made him laugh harder.
Oh god.
When the fit had finally subsided, Connor glanced at her from where he lay on her bed, grinning. She smiled back at him before glancing at the clock next to her night stand. "It's almost - ." The girl didn't get to finish; the eight o'clock bell sounded, signaling that he had to leave. For half a moment, the boy pouted slightly. He had been enjoying their talk. With a sigh, Connor rolled backwards into a standing position on the floor, folding his arms over his chest. "I gotta go," he muttered, glancing at her. She smiled and nodded, already reaching for the bag of homework next to her bed.

Slipping out the door, Connor folded his arms behind his head as he began to walk down the hallway, slowing making his way toward the boys' dorm building. As he walked, the boy stared up at the stars, trying to find a constellation in the jumbled mess. Unfortunately, he had never been good at astrology, so there went that idea. Actually, he wasn't particularly good at any subject.
A C student.
So how was he here?
Well, honestly, Connor wasn't sure.
All he knew was Minx (which was in fact her real name, since she had had it legally changed), his legal guardian, somehow managed to afford to send him to this fancy school. So, he was a rich kid; but no one really considered him a rich kid. He didn't wear brand name clothing all the time; he didn't have the nicest car; he didn't have the latest cell phone. It was Minx's philosophy that you didn't need all that fancy stuff, so why buy it?

As he was passing the building that held the library, it suddenly hit him that he had forgotten to pick up that history book for his research paper. Sighing, Connor turned off course and stepped into the building, making his way to the library.
And he was surprised when he found that there was someone else there.
Huh.
Looked like she was engrossed in her book.
Silently, Connor crossed the floor and made his way into the history section. Running his finger down the spines, the boy finally found the right book and pulled it free, sneezing as a cloud of dust followed.
Wow.
When was the last time anyone had touched this?
Shaking his head, the boy began to head toward the door with the book held at his side. Out of a whim, as he passed her, Connor glanced at the girl sitting in the floor and noticed the way she was staring at the book.
..Was she crying?
Blinking, he stopped and stared at her for a few moments before deciding to speak. "Hey... you alright?"

[Raylene Hope]

The library door creaked as it was opened, causing Raylene to glance up from her book. It was a brief thing, the tiniest flick of blue eyes. She saw the approaching boy and went back to reading. There was no point. They had nothing to say to each other. He would grab his book and go. She almost jumped when he sneezed, but her nerves were made of stronger stuff. The noise startled her but she remained calm and relaxed. Engrossed as she was in a book written about her ancestors terrible plight and unfair demise, the words ‘bless you’ did not even enter her mind.

As predicted, he grabbed his book and walked away. But he didn’t. She felt him stop rather than saw him. His presence washed over her, forcing her to look up at him. She was going to ask if she was in his way. Perhaps she was sitting in front of a book he needed. Her mouth had almost begun to form the words when he spoke. His words were unexpected. “I’m okay,” she told him. Then her perplexed expression melted into a smile. “The Trail of Tears. It is very sad. Have you heard of it?”

Her piercing gaze took the boy in. She did not recognize him, nor could she place is grade. She knew that her junior history class would talk about the Trail of Tears later in the year (Raylene always looked ahead in her text books), so if he was a senior he would probably know about it at least a little. That was assuming he remembered it. Not everyone was a history nut like she was. Raylene also had the added bias of being descended from those who walked the Trail of Tears. She could not help but wonder how many of the dead shared her blood.

Her reality felt split between the writing in the book and the stranger in front of her. The pain of over a hundred years ago was swirling in her head. How strange that she was, at the same time, smiling up at a fellow student. She couldn’t tell which side of Illinor Prep he stood on. He neither looked like a scholarship student or a rich kid. Her curiosity flared as it always did when there was something she did not know, but it was a subtle emotion that gently stroked her mind without showing itself.

[Gavin]

There was something wrong. Something was very, very wrong. What was it? What was wrong? Something was missing. Math homework? No, right there, half done and discarded for the sake of taking a break from numbers. English? Couldn't be missing, he was working on it right now. What was missing?
It was eight o'clock, there went the bell. This was no time for a major emergency. "Calm down, you're fine. There's time... No there isn't. Shit."
Gavin Shepherd was once again spending the evening alone trying to keep up his GPA. His last history exam had been a B, and he was getting worried. It wasn't like a bunch of country farmers were paying for this school completely out of pocket. It wasn't a full ride, but that scholarship was still keeping him at Illinor Prep. He'd graduate at the end of next year, if he could just keep up those grades...
Wait, History exam... History... Extra credit! His extra credit report! Where was it? Where had he put it? He had just been working on it... in the library. Damn, it was still in the library.

Most would forget about it, extra credit and all, but Gavin was on a mission. Like it or not, his family wanted him to be a doctor and Illinor Prep was a good place to start. He had to get straight A's, even if his scholarship allowed for a B or two.
He grabbed a hoodie for the sake of not knowing what the weather was like outside, a gray 'Illinor Prep' affair proudly proclaiming that he hadn't been to the mall in a while and had been forced to buy something out of the student store in the gym, intended of course for gym classes. Whatever, it went well enough with jeans anyways.

Nearly tripping over two different tree roots (seriously, the things were trying to kill him) he sprinted the whole way to the library. Thank god the thing was still open.
Now where would he have put his notebook? It would almost have to be on a shelf with the history books by accident.
Ignoring library rules about not running, he sprinted on down the rows of books, nearly running into the pair chatting about something or other, completely ignoring them to pick through the books about the crusades.
There! Right next to "An Illustrated History of the Crusades", spiral bound and obvious, was his notebook.
Ha. His extra credit on Assassins was going to get turned in after all. Er, Hashsahshin... Good thing he didn't have to read it out loud.

Finally taking the time to notice the other two, Gavin's heart sank. Great, Raylene Hope. He wasn't sure if it was a good thing or a horrific tragedy that she was talking to some other guy. Sure, Gavin knew her whole schedule because he'd paid some first year student to find it for him and memorized it. Sure, he'd flipped out when he'd realized they were in the same Math class. Sure, he had been trying to work up the nerve to ask her to a dance since he'd first met her. That didn't mean he would ever be able to actually get close to someone like Raylene Hope.
She was rich, probably popular, and she wasn't going to want to talk to Gavin 'take a left at Kansas' Shepherd.
"Sorry, sorry about that. Didn't mean to jump over you, wasn't paying attention, I was in a hurry..." He was turning scarlet, and there was no stopping it. Damn.

[Connor]

Trail of Tears, Trail of Tears...
Oh!
Wasn't that what the path the Native Americans had taken when they were forced into reserves? Yeah, something like that... Connor was pleased with himself for remembering that, since he hadn't even heard it mentioned since his eighth grade year.
"Yeah, I've heard - ."
The boy was unable to finish his sentence as, suddenly, someone flew passed him. He was glad for his quick reflexes, as the other kid would have run into him had Connor not shifted forward a few inches. His brown eyes flicked toward the runner, narrowing slightly at him. It didn't even seem like he had noticed the two of them in the middle of the floor. Finally, however, the kid noticed them.

Wait...
Was he turning red?

Blinking in confusion, Connor eyed Gavin for a moment, catching the way he looked at Raylene. Then his eyes shifted back to her. Oh. Now he understood. For the first time, the boy actually examined her; he couldn't place where he had seen her before, however, and that bothered him. Was she in any of his classes? Maybe that was it...
Oh!
Now he knew who she was.
Raylene Hope, the rich girl with the straight A's.
Huh. Well then...
His eyes flicked back to Gavin, his head tilting to the side. The boy had apologized and rambled on, but Connor was doubting that any of it had been directed at him. Honestly, the boy probably should have said a polite goodbye and left with his book. But he didn't. He didn't want to go chill out in his dorm yet.

After an awkward pause, Connor grinned.
"But, uh, yeah. I'm Connor, by the way."
Anything to fill the silence.

[Tobias Lysand]

Tobias jumped at the sound of the 8 o'clock bell, his heart racing in his chest before he could calm it down. It was just the bell. Nothing to be jumpy about... The freckled-face boy sighed, rubbing his tired gray eyes. He had been studying for hours, but he still had more to do. He was in the corner of the library, unnoticed by those who entered and left, which was how he preferred it. He was a rather quiet boy, and being around people made him anxious. Especially at this school.

He wasn't one of the rich kids. Of course, that wasn't to say that he as poor either. Well his situation was a bit more complicated than that. He didn't live with his parents. He didn't even know who they were. He instead lived with Aradath, a man who was close to being elderly. He didn't remember how he had become his guardian, but he didn't really care much.

Almost since the time he was 6 years old, Aradath had kept him on a stringent schedule of studying, all so that he could get a scholarship to this school. Well, Tobias did, having gotten straight A's at his old school. And now... Now he was pretty miserable.

He was homesick. Terribly so. Back at home, he rarely strayed from his master's side, but here he wasn't even around. The only thing here for him were books now.

Aradath had told him that he would make friends here, but Tobias hardly knew where to start. What did he do? Just go up and talk to them? It made him uneasy to consider it. What would he say?

People thought him to be strange. No only was he a bookworm, but he was one of those that could practice magic. That was another thing he had been taught since he was six; to control something that others couldn't understand.

He looked over to a small group that had gathered elsewhere in the library. He ran his hands through his shaggy brown hair a bit nervously, hoping that they didn't notice him there. Maybe it would be best if he just left and continued studying in his room. He gathered all his books and study materials, quietly making his way out of the library. Unfortunately, he tripped, sending books and papers flying everywhere as he hit the ground painfully.

"Oof..." He got up, dusting off his khaki pants, and straightening his red button-up vest that he wore over a white dress shirt. "Oh..." He crouched down, hurrying to gather up his papers.

[Gavin]

Gavin needed an escape route. He was babbling like an idiot, clearly, and the other guy, what's-his-face, was staring at him like you would stare at a dog that had just asked you about the weather. "Yeah but, I mean, you know-"
-thunk-
What was that? Gavin turned, saw some kid sprawled out on the floor with his books all over the place, and took it as a gift from the heavens. Escape route! Yes! Whoever he was, he was now Gavin's best friend.
"I'm Gavin Shepherd and I'm in your, uh, but- I mean, I gotta go..." He hardly took the time to introduce himself before rushing off to exploit the poor kid who'd tripped. Whoever he was, he was going to get help whether he wanted it or not.
A lot of help.

"Hey, you tripped." It wasn't a question, and it was probably rude, but Gavin wasn't feeling particularly eloquent at the moment. "Listen, just pretend you know who I am and I'll help you back to the dorm or whatever if you broke your leg or something... Not that I want you to have broken your leg or anything. You know what, just shut up and don't ask. Call me Gavin." He grabbed a few of the stray books, refusing to look back at Raylene Hope and that Connor boy. "You ever had one of those days?" Nevermind, bad question. Gavin wasn't the one sprawled out on the floor.
Now, if he had known anything about what was good for him, Gaivn would have shut up and helped his poor victim. Instead, he kept on babbling. "Okay, sorry. Of course you are - having one I mean. But so am I. I only came here for my history notes, and then I run into Raylene Hope who I doubt you know because she's probably stuck-up and popular but that isn't the important part. Stalker, I'm a stalker, aren't I? Not even on purpose this time! She's probably freaked or something... What's new?"
Might as well let the other guy add to the conversation.

[Tobias Lysand]

Tobias stared up at the boy who had apparently felt the need to help him. He stared at him with his wide gray eyes. He felt... fear.

Now this wasn't to say that he was completely afraid of strangers, but this guy... He was just a little bit strange. No, more than that. In fact, he was afraid that the guy was just a flat out sociopath. "M-My leg?" he squeaked. How many people broke their legs around here just falling? He hastily gathered his books back up as he wanted to escape this guy as quickly as possible.

Oh spirits, why was he still talking? Raylene Hope? Stuck-up? Popular? Should he be insulted now? Had the boy just insinuated that he didn't have friends? Well he didn't, but that was beside the point. He found that his face was paling slightly as he just went on and on. "This time?"

Oh spirits, so he had stalked before? He felt slightly dizzy from it all. Why as it that he attracted the weird sorts of people? He supposed that he had better introduce himself. "T-T-Tobias." He scrambled to his feet, picking up his books and taking the ones Gavin had gathered from him quickly.

She was freaked? Well she wasn't the only one. "I-I-I'm fine, r-really. I, um... I can get back on my own. Er, I, um... Th-thanks?" He backed away a bit. It was probably rude, but oh spirits this kid scared him.

[Raylene Hope]

Raylene heard the sound of sprinting footsteps before the door opened. This distracted her. It was not often one saw another running towards the library. That told her one thing: scholarship student. She watched the door through the bookshelves, wandering who else would join them in the library that night. To her surprise, it was Gavin. She recognized him from her math class. Ugh. Raylene hated math. It was all so technical and black and white, and there was so much to remember. Not that she had a bad memory. But everything was all the same! Just jumbles of numbers and letters and symbols and…

She was babbling in her head. Raylene quieted the thoughts. The point was, it was a boring class. Had she smiled in that class ever? Even once? Probably not. Luckily, another student entered and destroyed her thoughts by tripping. She looked at him. Another stranger. She looked from him to Gavin, who for some reason looked even more embarrassed than the kid who had just tripped. Odd. And he was babbling some kind of apology. Before she could open her mouth to respond, Gavin turned his attention to the boy who had tripped and started helping him away.

Unfortunately for Gavin, he had taken very little care to prevent Raylene from hearing his rambling rant. Stuck up? Popular? Stalker? Aside from the stalker part, was that how people saw her? Was Gavin a stalker? She watched as the other stranger backed away, obviously freaked out by Gavin’s onslaught. “Gavin? Are you okay?” Originally, the words were meant for the kid who tripped. Physically, he seemed okay. It was Gavin who somehow seemed the worse for wear. Her words were friendly and polite, not in the least freaked out like the kid who tripped. Maybe he had a fever.

The fact that his accusation hurt her never showed on her face. Stuck up? Really? Was that how people construed her aloofness? Had she been poor, they would have said shy. Then again, Raylene looked too confident to be shy. Was she stuck up, then? Raylene never thought of herself that way. Her father would never allow stuck up behavior. Raylene simply did not connect with people her own age very well. Did that make her stuck up? Maybe. It was not something she had ever really thought about. Raylene would have to think more about this later, when she was alone.

[Gavin]

He was getting the impression that Raylene had overheard him. Pah! That's what the girls were all so good at, evesdropping.
He didn't turn around or anything, trying to pretend that he wasn't getting even redder... He did have to say something, so Gavin mumbled "Oh yes... Fine... S-sorry about that."
Tobias! He still had a sworn duty to protect Tobias! "That's fine, I'm going back too. I'll just follow you. I just had to pick up my notes, I left them here earlier. So now I'm leaving. Would have left earlier except you tripped. So then I helped you. Remember?"
Of course he did.
Gavin took another step to make up the distance Tobias had put between them, sensing the kid's terror but ignoring it. In fact, Gavin felt like he could use that terror to his advantage, make the poor guy squirm until he promised to be his fake friend.
"So, Toby, I can call you Toby, right? Well, Toby, you've got to get back before your leg starts bleeding or whatever. Nasty fall, I guess I'll help with that. Stopping the bleeding, that is. I've been reading medical textbooks and stuff. It's like watching one of those TV shows..."
There! He could do it! His face wasn't burning anymore! Gavin turned around and waved a big 'goodbye' to Raylene and that Colin boy. Carter. Whatever. "Guess I'll be seeing both of you some other time!"
Right. He grabbed his new buddy by the elbow and started towards the door. "Take it easy Toby, you don't want to hurt yourself."
